Trauma and Inner Ear Problems

Trauma and Inner Ear Problems: Understanding the Connection

Head or neck injuries—such as those from a fall, sports injury, or car accident—can affect the inner ear, a key part of the vestibular system responsible for balance and spatial awareness. The peripheral vestibular system, located in the inner ear, helps you maintain equilibrium and coordinate eye and head movements.

When this system is disrupted, individuals may experience symptoms such as:

  • Spinning sensations (vertigo)
  • Unsteadiness or imbalance
  • Blurred or unstable vision with movement
  • Hearing changes or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

In some cases, trauma can trigger Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), a condition where small crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and cause brief episodes of dizziness with head movement. Symptoms and severity vary depending on the nature and extent of the injury.

Unfortunately, many people reduce or avoid movement due to discomfort or fear of worsening symptoms. However, limiting activity can delay recovery.

How Vestibular Physical Therapy Can Help

At Harmony Physical Therapy, our clinicians are specially trained in vestibular rehabilitation—a therapy designed to address dizziness, balance deficits, and visual instability caused by inner ear injuries.

Our treatment approach includes:

  • A comprehensive evaluation of your dizziness, balance, and eye-head coordination
  • Customized exercises to improve balance, reduce dizziness, and stabilize vision with head movements
  • Hands-on repositioning maneuvers for conditions like BPPV

Targeted therapy for neck stiffness or pain that may be contributing to your symptoms

Early intervention can make a meaningful difference in your recovery. With a personalized rehabilitation plan, you can regain your confidence, improve your stability, and return to the activities you enjoy.
